Recently, Kunming Changshui International Airport Co. Ltd. announced that Kunming Changshui International Airport has been awarded Four-Star "Dual Carbon Airport" certification, becoming one of the first three airports in the country to receive this honor.
Kunming Changshui International Airport has consistently integrated the concept of green and low-carbon development throughout its entire lifecycle, from planning and construction to operation. Through measures such as optimizing the energy structure, promoting the application of clean energy, and upgrading energy-saving equipment, the airport has seen its carbon‑emission intensity decline year by year. In terms of energy management, Kunming Changshui International Airport has established an energy management system and one of the first carbon management systems in the civil aviation industry, both of which have been certified. It has also established the first energy management platform in China's civil aviation industry, leading in intelligent energy management. Lighting energy-saving renovations have been completed, with 66,508 light sources replaced.
In terms of pollution prevention, Kunming Changshui International Airport continues to deeply advance the control of plastic pollution, with a 100% coverage rate of degradable products in terminals and parking buildings. A convenient passenger travel application platform has been built, featuring self-verification and matching business processes, enabling passengers to pass through with facial recognition for their entire outbound journey. A self-built reclaimed water treatment plant ensures that 100% of reclaimed water is reused for on-site greening, dust reduction, and other purposes. Innovating in green economic models, it pioneered the BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) commercial model for the construction and operation of a solid waste treatment center, promoting the resource utilization of solid waste. In 2024, it was recognized as a "Waste-Free Airport" by Kunming Municipality.
Kunming Changshui International Airport is working to build a greener airport and enhance its carbon‑sequestration capacity. Since 2022, Kunming Changshui International Airport's Terminal 1 has continuously added and replaced green plants and flowers. Through multi-scale greening designs, the landscape quality, distinctiveness, and sustainable development capabilities have been significantly enhanced. Currently, the total greening area has reached approximately 4.16 million square meters, with a greening rate of about 60% for the airport area and about 42% for the apron area.
Furthermore, Kunming Changshui International Airport has collaborated on development projects to construct a photovoltaic system on approximately 50,000 square meters of rooftop space. This system generates an average of about 6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which is used for self-consumption with surplus electricity fed into the grid. The project was connected to the grid and began generating power at the end of August 2024. (Dian Zhong New Area News, Reporters Shu Junheng, Correspondents Ma Cong, Huang Xiongying)
