In line with the requirements of becoming a significant engine for high-quality economic development in Yunnan, this year, Yunnan Dian Zhong New Area, as the only national-level new area in Yunnan Province, has focused on modern industries such as petrochemicals, new materials, equipment manufacturing, biomedicine, electronic information, and extended industrial chains with targeted investment promotion. According to a unified calculation of regional GDP, the regional GDP of Yunnan DIan Zhong New Area reached 83.776 billion yuan in the first three quarters of 2023, up 9.9% year-on-year, which is 5.5% higher than the provincial average. The economic performance of Yunnan Dian Zhong New Area is showing a positive trend of sustained recovery.

In the 8 years since its establishment, Yunnan Dian Zhong New Area has successfully achieved its development goals based on 4 strategic positionings: an important fulcrum for China's outreach to South Asia and Southeast Asia, an important economic driver of Yunnan bridgehead construction, a comprehensive pilot zone of new urbanization construction in the western region, and a leading area for reform and innovation. In particular, in recent years, Yunnan Dian Zhong New Area has become the main battlefield of Yunnan, undertaking industrial transfer and maintaining steady and rapid high-quality development.

Since this year, the Party Working Committee and the Management Committee of Yunnan Dian Zhong New Area have upheld and implemented the guiding principles of the 20th CPC National Congress and adhered to the "3815" development strategy goals of the CPC Yunnan Provincial Committee, focusing on "promoting industry, emphasizing industrial development" to enhance the vitality of the industrial economy. In the first three quarters of this year, the added value of the industrial economy of Yunnan Dian Zhong New Area increased by 19.1% year-on-year, a rise of 4.6% compared to the first half of the year. Among them, the added value of the petrochemical industry rose by 12.1%, that of the electronic industry increased by 276.6%, that of the automobile manufacturing industry went up 22.1%, and that of food manufacturing rose by 5% year-on-year.

Key project construction is accelerating.

Yunnan Dian Zhong New Area sped up the project construction to support economic development, continuously expanding the industrial investment. In the first three quarters, the industrial investment in Yunnan Dian Zhong New Area increased by 1.7% year-on-year, accounting for 5.06% of the total investment.

Service sector has achieved sustained and rapid recovery. 

While focusing on the industrial economy, Yunnan Dian Zhong New Area coordinated the overall development of industries such as aviation services, modern logistics, and trade services. In the first three quarters, the operating income of the service industry in Yunnan Dian Zhong New Area rose by 80%. Specifically, there was an increase of 97.9% in the transportation, warehousing, and postal industry. The residential services, maintenance, and other services industry saw a growth of 39.1%. The cultural, sports, and entertainment industry experienced a growth of 25.9% year-on-year, while the software and information technology services industry increased by 15.6% year-on-year.

Consumer spending continues to recover steadily.

In the first three quarters, the total retail sales of consumer goods in Yunnan Dian Zhong New Area increased by 0.5 percentage points compared to the first half of the year. Among units above the designated size, sales of tobacco and alcohol increased by 85.4% year-on-year, while household appliances and audiovisual equipment saw a growth of 28.8%. Furniture sales increased by 17.7% year-on-year, and there was a notable 17% increase in the sales of sporting and entertainment goods. (Editors: Ines, Amy)
